1 - Standard Adult Mental Health First Aid (SMHFA) - 12 hrs
This award-winning educational training program assists participants develop and enhance their mental health management skills, helping them to improve the mental health of colleagues, clients and the community. The training is a full two days with plenty of activity and fun along the way. We use a variety of learning methods such as case studies, context specific scenarios, videos, group work and role-plays (or dialogue if participants do not enjoy role plays).
The program applies a commonsense approach with user-friendly language. It defines the symptoms, causes and evidence-based treatments for the following common mental health disorders.
· Depression
· Anxiety Disorders
· Psychosis and
· Substance Use Disorder
The MHFA Program outlines the warning signs of mental health issues and provides information and education as to the most appropriate communication techniques (how to have conversations around mental health issues), referral sources and self-help strategies when dealing with mental health related issues.
Outcomes - At the completion of the program participants will be able to:
· Identify the signs and symptoms of stress
· Recognise potential stressors for self and others
· Discuss a variety of ways in which to reduce and manage stress
· Identify the signs and symptoms of depression, anxiety, substance abuse and psychosis.
· Discuss the causes and evidence-based treatments of 3 common mental health disorders.
· Discuss the warning signs of 3 common mental health disorders.
· Identify appropriate referral sources and self-help strategies for common mental health disorders.
· Apply the 5 actions of the MHFA Action plan to a workplace scenario
· Practice mindfulness techniques
· List 4 ways to build resilience in self and others
Participants who have completed the MHFA Program can become an Accredited Mental Health First Aider.
In order to do this the participant will need to complete an online Accreditation Test. If the participant passes the assessment, they will become an Accredited Mental Health First Aider and be issued a digital Certificate of Accreditation by MHFA Australia, valid for 3 years. There is no additional fee to sit the online accreditation assessment or receive the digital Certificate.
2 - Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) – 14 hrs
The Youth Mental Health First Aid Program is for adults working or living with adolescents (those aged between 12 and 18 years); however, the course can be relevant for those helping people who are a little younger or older. This course is particularly suitable for parents, teachers, sports coaches, and youth workers
The Program outlines the warning signs of mental health issues and provides information and education as to the most appropriate communication techniques, referral sources and self-help strategies when dealing with youth mental health related issues.
The Program applies a commonsense approach with user-friendly language. It defines the symptoms, causes and evidence-based treatments for the following common mental health disorders.
· Depression
· Anxiety Disorders
· Psychosis and
· Substance Use Disorder
· Eating Disorders

4 - Introduction to Mental Health and Wellbeing -1 day
This one-day educational training program assists participants develop and enhance their mental health management skills.
It defines the symptoms, causes and evidence-based treatments for common mental health disorders and outlines the warning signs of mental health issues. The program provides information and education as to the most appropriate communication techniques and referral sources when dealing with mental health related problems. Topics include:
· Mental health and illness
· The 6 R's - Recognise, Reasure, Refer, Resources, Reflect and Reconnect
· Effective communication strategies
· Depression
· Anxiety Disorder
· Substance Use Disorder
Outcomes - At the completion of the program participants will be able to:
· Identify the signs and symptoms of depression, anxiety, substance abuse.
· Discuss the warning signs of 3 common mental health disorders.
· Be able to recognise the signs and symptoms if someone is unwell; reasure the person; provide appropriate referral sources and self-help strategies for common mental health disorders and practice self reflection and self care.

5 - Mental Health First Aid for the Suicidal Person Course
This 4-hour face-to-face course is based on our expert consensus guidelines ‘Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviours: First Aid Guidelines’. Curriculum content is evidence-based, with the input of mental health professionals, researchers and consumer advocates. What will you learn?
Outcomes - At the completion of the program participants will be able to:
• How to identify warning signs for suicide • How to confidently support a person in crisis • How to have a conversation with someone experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviours at the completion of the course you will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to safely have a conversation with a suicidal person. Course participants will receive a handbook and an online Certificate of Completion.
6 - Lunch and Learn Sessions - The Body / Mind Connection / Stress. These topic areas can be tailored to meet depth and breadth of content, depending upon individual needs and desired outcomes.
Liven up your lunchtime or staff development day with a fun and interactive information session for staff as part of your workplace health and wellness initiatives.
Topics can be linked / modified to organizational areas of interest and tailored to your context and needs.
The sessions are short, sharp and fun, but also have some thought provoking and perhaps challenging messages underpinning the presentation and exercises.
These short sharp sessions generally run between 1.5hrs to 2hrs and provide staff with some easy, practical ways to apply stress management and mindfulness techniques at home and in the workplace. The session is interactive with handouts, exercises and PowerPoint presentation on any of the following topics.
📷 Stress – What is it, how does it affect us. What can we do about it? The mind body connection - Fight and Flight – from Neanderthal to now, physiological, emotional and psychological responses to stress, the connection between stress and obesity. Individual differences. Stress management techniques.
📷 Mindfulness – What is it? How can I apply this to my life to reduce stress, increase focus and change my relationship with painful thoughts, emotions and feelings?
📷 Resilience – What is it? Individual, organizational. What strategies do I use to increase my resilience? Problem solving, My Wellness Toolbox.
📷 Change – Maintaining the status quo (our subconscious resistance to change) the thinking feeling loop / cycle. Capacity for change. Mindfulness and change - Being an observer of your own thoughts and feelings can help to reduce the impact our emotions have on others and us and promote constructive dialogue.
📷 Values vs. Goals – living a rich full meaningful life – knowing and doing what is important to me.
📷 Committed action – What small steps can I take to be the person I want to be and lead the life I want? What steps can we collectively take to be the community / organization / workplace we want to be?
📷 Vulnerability – The power of vulnerability. Same and Fear. Connections, blame, self-compassion, risk and trust.
📷 My Wellness Toolbox – Key concepts of resilience and recovery. My triggers and early warning signs. My personal action plan for responding.

When you complete a MHFA Course, you have the opportunity to complete an online Accreditation Exam. If you pass the Exam, you will become an Accredited MHFAider and be issued a digital Certificate of Accreditation by MHFA Australia, valid for 3 years. There is no additional fee to sit the online Accreditation Exam or receive the digital Certificate.

How can I become an accredited MHFAider?
You are eligible to attempt the online Accreditation Exam, if you have: • completed a MHFA course within the last 30 days, • an email address, • consented to share your email address and your first and last name with your MHFA Instructor to enter online at the MHFA Australia website www.mhfa.com.au
About 3 days after the course ends, you will receive an email from mhfa@mhfa.com.au with a unique link to access the online course feedback form and Accreditation Exam. You will only have one month after the course ends to enter your feedback and attempt the Accreditation Exam.
What does completing the Accreditation assessment involve?
The online accreditation exam has 15 questions, which are a mixture of multiple-choice questions based on scenarios and True or False questions. You can have your MHFA manual with you. None of the questions are difficult for someone who has attended an MHFA course. You will be offered a second attempt on any incorrectly answered questions.
What if I don't have an email address yet or don’t want to share my personal details?
1. You could set up an email address (for tips see www.mhfa.com.au/firstaider). Share this, along with a first name and last name with your MHFA instructor so that they can enter this into the MHFA Australia website. You don’t have to share your real name, i.e. you could use a pseudonym.
2. You can request a paper copy of the feedback form from your MHFA instructor. Your instructor will enter this feedback on your behalf. Unfortunately, the Accreditation Exam is only administered online, so the downside is that you would not be able to complete the Exam without sharing an email address.
